Statement on COVID-19 Pandemic
In the past few weeks the effect of COVID-19 has been felt in Africa and Nigeria. As of the 25th of March over 50 cases have been recorded in Nigeria with one mortality. We have seen this deadly virus overwhelm hospitals and critical care capacity in countries across the globe.
Our government is working in partnership with our society to cater for the potential rise in the number of cases and critical care units are gearing up for the days and weeks ahead. However critical care resources are limited and the emphasis must be on prevention of spread and protecting the vulnerable.
The symptoms of this infection include, cough, fever, sore throat and shortness of breath.
To this end we enjoin us all to follow the guidelines given by the government and the WHO:
Stay home.
Avoid public spaces.
Avoid physical interaction with others.
Wash your hands frequently.
As a community, if we all follow these simple rules we can, and we will, save the lives of our elderly, people with serious chronic conditions and people who are immune compromised.
To the doctors we applaud your bravery, as essential services, coming to work everyday is an act of courage. We ask that more than ever you ensure that you protect yourselves, physically and emotionally. Personal Protective Equipment is not an option, it’s a necessity.
The COVID-19 pandemic is the biggest public health threat in our history. The decisions all of us make today to prevent its spread and protect the most vulnerable will be the legacy we leave to future generations.
We will continue to fight against this pandemic and we will win.
